After I got started putting things other than hair on top of people's heads, I realized it was a fun way to combine a classical sculpture with something playful.
This is Daphne of Greek myth, although she didn't begin exactly that way. At the community clay studio where I made her, I needed to buy more clay to finish the piece. The woman who unlocked the storage room for me saw that I had a bust with a tree growing out of her bare head, and she asked me if it was Daphne. After I looked up the myth, I said that indeed she was. So thanks again, Natasha, for asking the perfect question!
The bust already had her head twisted to the side, so that worked to have Daphne portrayed as she refuses Apollo's advances. Doesn't she have a NO face going? It led me to adding hair that resembles classical marble sculpture with wild, twisted locks of hair.
The surface looks metallic, with a combination of metal reactive paint that patinas to look like bronze and other metallic paint (acrylic) highlights. She's a little too big for my photo box so I had to take her out to the lawn to get photos. I'm classy like that.
