Wall Mounted Clay Sculpture "Hand Signals"

This piece hangs in our living room at the moment. I can now tell you it is a joy to live with! 

The plain white hands on a natural walnut background are striking, and since each hand is individually sculpted using a professional hand model (just kidding, I use my own unprofessional hands as models), each hand is unique.

I started my art life as a quilt maker and I came up with a theory based on looking at hundreds of quilts. A black and white checkerboard quilt is knowable at a glance, and from there, the complexity can increase until each quilt square is unique. My theory is that the less knowable-at-a-glance a piece is, the more you tend to want to study it to take in the details and differences.

The high contrast of the hands and their background draw my attention, and then the differences keep me looking. You too?
